For many expectant mothers, fetal movement can be an important indicator of the baby's health and wellbeing.

What is fetal movement and how can I count it?
Babies move frequently in the womb. On average, they sleep for 15-20 minutes and then start moving.

To count the number of times your baby moves, get in a comfortable position on your side to facilitate oxygen transportation to the womb. Use a clock or stopwatch to count how many times your baby moves per hour in different times of the day (morning, afternoon, night).

How can I tell if my baby is moving?
There are many ways you can tell if your baby is moving:

  • A push at the walls of the womb
  • Feeling a kick when placing hands on your abdomen
  • A bump or ripple on your abdomen

When's the best time to count my baby's movements?
Ideally, you should count your baby's movements at the same time each day. A good time would be after a meal as this is when your baby usually moves the most.

What's a healthy count?
Your baby should move at least 8-10 times in an hour's span. If your baby moves fewer than 8 times an hour you must call your doctor immediately. Your doctor will be able to better assess the situation by using a baby heart rate monitor.
